Teekay suezmax aground near Lisbon

Amid very rough conditions on the Atlantic this weekend a suezmax tanker grounded near Lisbon, Portugal, just in front of a marina. The Tokyo Spirit (149,996 dwt; built 2006) was unladen when it ran into difficulty with winds topping 50 knots off the Portuguese coast on Saturday.

The ship was acquired by Teekay this June as part of the Canadian firm’s 12-vessel acquisition of the fleet of Principal Maritime.

The ship is managed by Bernhard Schulte, who issued a release saying the 22 crew are safe and still onboard and there has been no reports of an oil leak.

Six tugs have been called into action and efforts are underway to refloat the vessel.
