43 boxes still not accounted for from MSC Zoe spill
The Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat and containerline Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) have located around 220 of an estimated 281 containers that fell off the giant boxship MSC Zoe in the North Sea last week. Most of the containers, located with the help of sonar boats, are at the bottom of the North Sea, near the Wadden Islands. Three of the containers that fell from the vessel contain toxic substances.
A total of 18 containers have already washed ashore, meaning some 43 boxes are still missing. Clean-up operations of all the containers and debris that washed ashore on a pair of Dutch islands are still on going.
MSC has vowed to pay for the complete clean-up in the wake of the accident.
The ship remains docked at Bremerhaven where investigations are underway into how the accident happened.
