Explosion at Russian yard kills one, wounds three

A shipyard worker died and another three were injured following a blast in the hold of a ship under repair in St Petersburg yesterday.

The accident happened in the morning at Severnaya Verf (Northern Shipyards). A total of 75 emergency crew were deployed to the scene.

The names of the victims and the ship have not been released.

Local authorities have begun an investigation into how the accident happened, with a welding error deemed the most likely reason.
