Why owners should look to sell ships now

The case to cash in and sell secondhand tonnage leads the April issue of Splash Extra, published today.

Both newbuild and secondhand vessel prices are exceptionally high (see chart below) at present leading many of the world’s top shipping analysts to advise that owners ought to start looking at sell-off plans.

“From a pure asset play perspective and based on our outlook, now or the imminent future presents an excellent opportunity for owners to sell tonnage and maximise returns,” Dr Adam Kent, managing director of UK consultancy Maritime Strategies International (MSI), told Splash Extra, in an article that also features Scorpio Tankers’ Emanuele Lauro, SSY’s Roar Adland, and the world’s most famous maritime economist, Dr Martin Stopford among others.

Published on the last Wednesday of every month and priced for as little as $200 a year, Splash Extra serves as a concise monthly snapshot, ensuring readers are on top of where the shipping markets are headed.

Elsewhere in the April issue, subscribers can read about how VLCC earnings are having their best year since 2015, the volatility being experienced in the cape trades, and the approaching peak in the teu tsunami slamming into the container trades.
