Anil Sharma eyes ship leasing

Anil Sharma, best known as a cash buyer for ships for recycling, is looking at a new business strand.

Sharma’s Global Marketing Systems Inc (GMS) is the world’s largest buyer of ships and offshore assets for recycling. On top of that, he has Lila Global, a shipowning division that has grown rapidly in the last couple of years.

Up next? Ship leasing is on the cards. Sharma told local media in India that he is looking at opening a ship leasing unit at the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Gujarat.

So far, eight entities have sought approvals to start ship leasing businesses from the IFSC, a special economic zone with notable tax benefits.
