Bulk carrier with 23 crew hijacked off Somalia

A Bangladesh-flagged bulk carrier Abdullah with 23 crew was boarded in the Indian Ocean Tuesday by suspected Somali pirates some 600 nautical miles east of Mogadishu.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it had received reports from the “company security officer” of multiple armed persons boarding and taking control of the ship. In a separate note, maritime security specialist Ambrey said the operation was carried out from one small and one large craft.

One of the hostages, Atiq Ullah Khan – the chief officer of the Abdullah, was able to send an audio message to his wife. According to Bangladeshi media, the pirates are under orders to kill the crew members one by one if they are not paid. The message also said that the sooner the pirates got the payment, the sooner they would release the hostages.

The chief officer was also able to tell his mother they were all locked in a cabin surrounded by 50 pirates and on their way to Somalia, some two and a half days away.

The 2015-built supramax of SR Shipping and part of the Kabir Steel Re-Rolling Mills (KSRM) Group in Bangladesh was carrying coal from Maputo, Mozambique, to Hamriya, UAE.

Ambrey had previously observed the ship altering course to the southeast and increasing speed, which was later on reduced to one knot and also advised other ships to “stay well clear of this position”.

The most recent UKMTO update said that the crew are unharmed and that there are 22 unauthorised armed persons onboard.

Piracy was rampant off Somalia for a four-year period from 2008, but then it went dormant for about five years. Earlier this month, the Maritime Security Centre Horn of Africa (MSCHOA) reported an unnamed hijacked fishing dhow departing Somalia with 11 armed persons onboard. In January, Liberian-flagged capesize Lila Norfolk was boarded by armed men some 460 nautical miles off Somalia but subsequently rescued by the Indian Navy.

    1. Doesn’t work and also causes other problems. On the other hand well trained crew with water hoses does.

  1. it’s a out time crews were armed and trained. then they could shoot them or drop small grenades on to them before the board

  2. Foreigners think they live in the 16th century. They feel they own the world & have the rights to trade on others continental water ways freely without paying for it. How many seas/ oceans in developed world is free trade navigation even for boats? Those pirates own the red sea, they have the rights because it is in their country/ continent. Pay to navigate so they can develop their country.

    1. For your information deep sea are called international water and it is to everyone in the world. These poor sailors work hard and believe in peace. We made a nearly first world country by hard work not like you lazy bums. India is our friend and we expected they should take action. Soon we will send our own submarine feet to teach you a lesson.

    2. ” How many seas/ oceans in developed world is free trade navigation even for boats? ”
All of them for vessels in transit.

    3. Lacny, your argument would be valid IF ANY PART OF WHAT YOU ASSERT WAS TRUE. However, “the pirates” DO NOT OWN THE RED SEA NOR DO THEY HAVE ANY RIGHT TO TARGET, ATTACK, or DEMAND TARIFFS, TAXES, DUTIES, OR ANY FEE’S FOR USING THE WATERS BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES THAT ARE DEEMED TO BE SOMILIAN SOVEREIGN WATERS. These vessels ARE NOT COMMERCIAL FISHING VESSELS & the crews are NOT depleting the waters of marine life for the Somalian citizens to sustain life. If that were the case, both Somlilian & the international waters beyond the Somilian established waters along the entirety of the Somilian Coastline including the HOA wouldn’t have one of the highest concentrations of Apex predators, sharks, thriving there. Regardless, the INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ESTABLISHED IN THE LATE 50s what constitutes a nation’s sovereign waters versus international waters. Rogue nations & people such as the Chinese Government (CCP) & Somalian Pirates are NOT doing what they do because of waters being depleted of fish. They do what they do for 3 reasons: 1) To steal, and extort money 2) to feed their ignorance & delusional belief their actions are somehow projecting power & by default equate them as being “powerful” 3) Because they can. I am confident the majority if not all of “the pirates” actively engaged, not the mothership, are young, uneducated, drug addicts that have NEVER been resisted by anything more than what Mr. Boffey is a proponent of…In other words, there is no real incentive not to actively participate because the worst that has happened to them has been defending themselves against a K-Mart Super-Soaker 3000 (kid’s water gun). The point being is this, YOUR REASONING LACKS ANY VALIDITY, ie. REALISTIC, FACT-BASED JUSTIFICATION TO CONSIDER AS VALID. International waters and the Laws of the Sea were established in detail in 1958. Different from your argument is Mr. Boffey’s steadfast conviction that using high-pressure water cannons is the primary if not the last line of defense. While that method is unfortunately what has been adopted by the majority of blue water vessels the harsh reality is there are too many variables with that method to rely on to protect property and life. IMO, the international community needs to reach a consensus regarding having a security force aboard a vessel based on the size of the vessel, value/weight of cargo & number of crew, or a combination of these factors. Nations should also agree to endorse or certify…in essence, there needs to be an internationally accepted standard for training and certifying persons that provide maritime security. Nations should also agree on these personnel being legally able to secure the vessel from debarkation until mooring/docking or anchoring. A strict log or ledger of the weapons, ammo, who has what when, and where making security personnel sign out to obtain whatever…and having these logs made available upon inspection by people certified and trained to perform such inspections. I do not propose providing a ledger or log that broadcasts the actual # of personnel, methods, equipment, weapons, etc a security team may have on a vessel to protect property and life before reaching any port. Doing so would defeat the purpose due to corruption & possibility of a crew member or members being aware & sharing that information. The weapons and security personnel would NOT be allowed to debark or leave the vessel in port (Without specific circumstances or prior authorization from the host country) Currently, the primary reason more blue water companies do not have armed security on their vessels is a majority of not all countries prohibit any weapons crossing into their territory including their waters. However, countries that depend on imports and or rely on exporting should be able to draft a resolution for all countries to agree upon. I’ve heard the argument that security personnel would have a license to murder the open waters if these vessels had armed security…my rebuttal is simply to consider what small fast vessels should ever approach a large cargo vessel in the middle of an ocean or sea and come within range of any of the security personnel. I agree that high-pressure water cannons have thwarted piracy attempts in the past but data shows that piracy took a massive nose dive, and declined after the Alabama Maersk incident when the US Navy dispatched 3 pirates and imprisoned the other for commandeering their US FLAGGED VESSEL…data doesn’t lie that piracy is increasing…I’m certain they watch the news and see how pathetically weak and twisted too many world leaders are currently…focusing on protecting criminals more than their citizens…their actions, decisions, and policies have led to 100s of 1000s of deaths if not millions worldwide…In today’s environment, it is not good enough to be solely defensive and deter or impede 10% of piracy attempts…When you know your fort or base is about to be attacked or is likely to be attacked you do not wait until you are under attack to act…that is suicide. Why should anyone rely on a water hose to save their lives? With all due respect that is beyond ignorant. I have been in combat and have witnessed firsthand what I have also studied regarding going on the offensive and engaging, eliminating, or inflicting damage against a hostile force before they are within range to threaten you or what you are protecting is devastating. I do not believe a single warning shot should be given because they will only attack the next vessel without security. To eliminate this threat from being viable and having it only as a rare once-a-decade exception then no warnings other than either having pamphlets, leaflets, or through whatever means of communication let it be known any fast boats approaching commercial vessels in international waters will be targeted with lethal force at the vessels discretion. Not to be too graphic but imagine 3 “skiffs” with 4-to 6 pirates in each…holding AKs and RPGs…the vessel’s radar alerts the crew and the security force…They deploy whatever countermeasures they decide…I would have at least 2 certified snipers…I realize moving platforms, high speed, and high seas is unlikely to hit targets from long distances…even so, whatever they deem is their best opportunity to dispatch one of the drivers…eliminate a driver from one skiff and a pirate from the front of another skiff..the damage caused by 50 caliber is beyond description and none of the pirates would pursue…those who congregate to be part of these pirating crews will not be as enthusiastic about participating once the word starts spreading that several pirates are dispatched with no successful boarding…I realize the reprisals would be high for any vessel that is without security and pirates get to them…However, you do not allow evil murderous thugs to exist if you want to exist in peace…there is no negotiating…there should not be any more ransoms paid… They stop traumatizing people doing their jobs, stop threatening death…or face death themselves. It is that cut and dry to someone who has battled against such evil…
