China helping build new Russia Far East port

Dalian: China is helping Russia build a large port at Zarubino, an ice free location just 18 km from the Chinese border. The port is connected by road and rail to the Chinese city of Hunchun in the province of Jilin. Jilin province has signed a deal with Russian transport firm Summa Group to develop the new port so that it can handle 60m tons of cargo a year. First phase development is scheduled for completion in 2018.

“Jilin has shown great interest in the port development project because it will help the inland province gain access to the sea,” state media reported. Currently Jilin shippers have to rely on the ports of Yingkou, Dalian and Dandong in neighboring Liaoning province to ship goods.  [02/10/14]
