China keen to up stake in Piraeus port

Athens: Chinese premier Li Keqiang wrapped up a busy Greek visit over the weekend, vowing to strengthen maritime ties between two of the most powerful nations in shipping.

Li visited Piraeus port, where Cosco operates two berths and has plans to operate more.

“China attaches great importance to Greece’s unique geographic advantage of being a gateway to Europe,” the two countries said earlier in a joint statement.

Li described the port of Piraeus as “a pearl in the Mediterranean Sea” and said it could become “one of the most competitive ports of the world”.  [23/06/14]
