Demo ‘floodgates’ ready to open

The ageing global fleet and renewal pressure look set to propel many more ships onto their final voyages this year and next with one cash buyer telling Splash Extra demolition volumes could nearly double year-on-year in 2023.

This year has already seen the volume of containerships heading for recycling make plenty of headlines, however other segments such as dry bulk could see many vintage ships heading for the beaches of south Asia soon too.

The average age of the main fleets is increasing with bulkers now at 11.1 years versus 8.7 years five years ago, tankers standing at 11.7 years versus 10.1 five years ago, and containerships at 13.7 years versus 11.4 in 2018, according to Clarksons data.

Splash Extra identifies likely scrap volumes in the main shipping sectors in 2023 and 2024 for its lead story, while inside there is regular markets commentary, a sale and purchase roundup, and an insightful column on how China became the world’s leading shipbuilding nation.
