Dredger launch signals big step for Malaysian shipbuilding

Kuala Lumpur: In a big step for the nation’s shipbuilding ambitions Malaysia Thursday launched Asia's biggest and the world's third largest trailing suction hopper dredger

The dredger is owned by Malaysia's largest marine services provider Inai Kiara and named Inai Kenanga. It has been built by Selat Melaka Shipbuilding Corporation Sdn Bhd (SMSCSB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Inai Kiara, and can achieve a speed of 17 knots with a capacity to dredge up to a depth of 45 m.

The dredger has a capacity to carry a load of 33,335 cu m in its hopper. It is 200 m long and 36 m wide.  [23/08/13]
