Economou’s Cardiff Marine takes first suezmax of the year

George Economou’s Cardiff Marine has been linked by brokers to its first tanker acquisition of the year. The Greek company has tapped compatriot Westgate Tankships to take on the RS Tara, a suezmax that delivered last year from China. Economou is paying $51m for the 160,036 dwt ship, brokers report.

Westgate Tankships is the tanker operating company of the Halkias family.

Cardiff Marine’s purchases this year to date have focused on dry bulk and primarily the kamsarmax sector.
