European Energy gives up on two wind projects offshore Denmark

Danish renewables company European Energy has decided to drop plans regarding the development of its Omø Syd (Omø South) offshore wind project.

The company has been developing the project for ten years and had the EIA approved back in 2020. However, the Danish government at the time was preparing to designate the area as a Natura 2000 bird sanctuary.

“We have tried to get the project to fly in coexistence with considerations of nature, but we have to conclude that authorities and politicians have not had much interest in this,” Andreas Karhula Lauridsen, vice president and head of offshore wind at European Energy, said in a LinkedIn.

The feasibility study permit for the Omø Syd project had a height limit of 200 metres, but due to today’s offshore wind turbines reaching 256 metres tall, Lauridsen stated that the project does not have a future.

European Energy will now turn towards realising the Jammerland Bugt, Lillebaelt South, and Frederikshavn projects, along with several onshore wind and solar projects throughout Denmark.

Jammerland and Lillebaelt South are projects being developed in cooperation with TotalEnergies under a new agreement of cooperation between the two companies signed last week.

French Energy major TotalEnergies has signed a new agreement with Danish renewables company European Energy to develop offshore wind projects in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.

The deal covers 405MW of offshore wind power under development in Denmark and includes TotalEnergies buying an 85% stake in the 240MW Jammerland Bugt and a 72.2% stake in the 165MW Lillebaelt South offshore wind projects. The final construction permits for the two are expected in mid-2024 and start up by 2030.
