Fugro to survey sites for Australia’s first offshore wind farm

Fugro has been awarded a contract to carry out an offshore geotechnical site investigation for Australia’s first offshore wind project, Star of the South.

The Netherlands-headquartered surveyor will utilise a specialist drill vessel, the Fugro Mariner for around five weeks to collect soil and rock samples from up to 70 m below the seafloor.

Partly funded by the Victorian Government through the Energy Innovation Fund, Star of the South is currently in the feasibility phase and has the potential to generate up to 2.2 GW of new capacity, supply around 20% of Victoria’s energy needs, and power around 1.2m homes across the state.

The Star of the South is located off the coast of Gippsland southeast of Australia. Once complete, it is anticipated the project will have a significant impact on Victoria’s energy sector, reducing carbon emissions and providing clean energy to the local community. The State of Victoria is targeting at least 2 GW of offshore generation capacity by 2032, 4 GW by 2035 and 9 GW by 2040.
