HKSOA hits out at Europe’s emissions tracking plans

Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Shipowners’ Association (HKSOA) has joined other notable shipping associations such as Bimco and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) in opposing European plans for regional monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of shipping emissions of CO2 emissions.

HKSOA argued that regulations should be global, not regional. The shipowning body also stressed the need for more time in order to create a proper metric for measuring emissions. “A simple definition of ‘multiplying the distance travelled with the amount of cargo carried’ will clearly benefit unprofitable and uneconomic diversions to reduce ballast legs, so reducing the efficiency of maritime transport,” HKSOA said.  [17/12/14]
