Houthis show no sign of backing down in tense Red Sea standoff

Houthi attacks against naval and merchant ships carried on over the weekend with more than one in five vessels electing to avoid the Suez Canal on routes between Asia and Europe.

Yemen’s Houthi militia have been targeting ships with drones and missiles in the southern Red Sea and beyond for the past two months in retaliation for Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas. More than 25 ships have been targeted, and one car carrier remains in Yemeni waters having been hijacked in November.

Yesterday, the leader of the Houthis, Mohammed Ali Al-Houthi, urged all ships planning to transit the Red Sea to notify his militia in advance with details of their destinations as well as declaring no connections with Israel to avoid being attacked.

The US Central Command reported on Saturday that the USS Laboon naval destroyer shot down a drone launched by the Houthis near commercial ships in Red Sea international waters.

Also over the weekend, six small craft approached a merchant ship some 50 nautical miles southeast of Mocha in Yemen. Naval ships in the region were quick to respond and the small vessels quickly moved away.

“What this shows is essentially that the threat to shipping in the area is unchanged, and as such we might expect carriers to continue on their round-Africa deployments with the usual exceptions,” commented Lars Jensen, via LinkedIn. Jensen is the head of container advisory Vespucci Maritime and has been carrying out detailed, daily updates on the unfolding Red Sea shipping crisis.

In Israel, the daily evening financial newspaper Globes is reporting that COSCO, the world’s fourth largest containerline, has stopped visiting Israeli ports, although there has been no confirmation if this is correct.

Comments

  1. This is obnoxious illegal piracy. I hope international rules of the sea are forcefully defended, and the pirates are dealt a forceful retaliation.

    1. Then Israel should be dealt the same thing. You upset because they blockading Israel. You not mad about the genocide being carried out?

      1. Genocide … The only Genocide that’s being carried out is from Hamas and Hamas only , they are the ones who built tunnels under civilization using the public as human shields .The residents of Gaza had advanced notice of what was going to happen after the attempt to make the Jews leave the Holy land . So it’s the HAMAS TERRIOR GROUP NOT ALLOWING THE PEOPLE TO BE FREE THAT’S CAUSING “GENOCIDE ” NOT ISREALS RIGHT TO DEFEND THEM SELF IS NOT . So if they would of stayed in Gaza and have not crossed over into Israel , KILLING INNOCENT HUMANS THE YOUNG , THE OLD THE DISABLED DID I SAY THE INNOCENT PEOPLE THERE WOULD BE NO “GENOCIDE”. (As you call it ) But Hamas has what right to try and end the existence of there people .

  2. This article’s headline is accompanied by a screenshot of a video that was linked to a BBC article claiming that the video of armed militants attacking a cargo ship was released by Houthis.

I was very surprised that it was published without anyone questioning the seemingly obvious fact that the video is actually video game footage.

Does this happen often and if so, doesn’t it worry editors that people might lose faith in the validity of stories they allow to be published?

    1. They been doing this a long time, look how they decide who comment goes. That’s not freedom

    2. I noticed the same thing! I can’t believe everyone can’t spot that it’s a game!

  3. So I’m sailing in the open sea, International Waters, and I need “permission” from pirates, er rebels, er Piece of Houthi(s) to keep sailing?
    ROTFLMMFAO!

  4. When someone is constantly hitting you with a big stick, you don’t keep shooting the stick. You give the guy a bloody nose he will stop. There have been direct attacks on US vessels. In the past this was an act of war and rapid retaliation was the result. So when did the USA become so weak in the spine? The Houthis can be taken out and neutralized in 15 minutes.

    1. You apparently didn’t notice America’s “withdrawal” from Afghanistan? The feckless, weak-kneed, spineless Democrats are bent on waging war, only against American citizens.

      1. I noticed. The question was rhetorical. I’m conservative but will admit that even the Bush administration fought a “politically correct ” war and the wrong war at that.

      2. Only those citizens breaking the law…as it has always been…or should have, but in the past the rich and famous got a pass…not anymore. And all the morons at Jan 6th should have been shot as traitors.

    2. It’s because the present administration lacks the backbone to deal with this crisis…..start taking out the sites in Yemen where the attacks originated….

    3. The houthis have one of the largest stock piles of ballistic missiles in the world, estimates near 300,000 separate missles. It’s just not a good fight to be in. To many rules in war that we “need” to follow to be fighting people who give 0 fucks and have that much fire power

    4. It is not about winning the battle. Surely USA can bleed the nose. Yemen wants USA to attack them, so that Iran can participate in full. Those US’S air craft carrier are sitting ducks, considering war weapon now have changed, compare to 10;years ago. Biden knows this. Supersonic missiles can sink the carrier. Iran has plenty of them, i.e, now Yemen has them too.

  5. Untill the international laws being smashed by Israel in Gaza, Houthis are doing good job!

    1. What? You can’t be serious with that asinine statement. Learn your facts and history before condemning Israel for defending her country and citizenry.
Terrorists need to be exterminated to bring peace to the world.

  6. Yemen fighters are the only nation standing up and fighting against a government that is waging genocide, while y’all worry about cargo containers

  7. Only one of army to support Gaza innocent why other gulf country umma of Muslims are sleeping I salute to yamni or houthis army WHO / UNO shame you. What’s are you doing killing baby’s woman children youngers Allah subhan gives justice.
    Insha Allah o Ajjal.
