Jumbo and SAL welcome Intermarine into heavy lift alliance

Dutch maritime heavy lift transport and engineering contractor Jumbo Shipping and German breakbulk and project cargo specialist SAL Heavy Lift have formed a new joint venture with liner operator Intermarine.

Jumbo and SAL Heavy Lift have already been partners in the Jumbo-SAL-Alliance since 2021. From March 1, Intermarine will join the now named JSI Alliance which will have a combined fleet of 50 vessels. As operators and owners, Jumbo, SAL, and Intermarine remain independent allowing the three brands to be active in the market.

According to the trio, the new joint venture is an evolution of the previous alliance. They will operate in 23 countries worldwide and the combined fleet will range from multipurpose vessels to heavy lift ships, with a lifting capacity of up to 3,000t SWL. All sales offices will be unified from day one as the JSI Alliance offices will represent all three members.

This diverse fleet means that the JSI Alliance, which has over 120 years of experience among its three members, will be able to offer semi-liner and liner services as well as customised project shipping solutions be it transport solutions for small parcels and single cargo items to the most complex industrial cargo units.

Although Jumbo and SAL fleets are complementary, the Intermarine fleet is based on multipurpose vessels typically geared up to a maximum of 500t SWL, which is essentially where the size of the Jumbo and SAL vessel fleet begins.

Intermarine is also operating a mix of owned and time-chartered vessels, both on a short- or long-term basis. The owned fleet is usually used for complex cargo operations while volume cargo and vessel positions are given to the time-chartered part of the fleet.
