Keppel to build ice-class ship in S$265m deal

Singapore: Singapore-based specialised shipyard Keppel Singmarine has won a S$265m ($200m) contract to build an ice-class multi-purpose vessel for New Orient Marine.

The vessel is expected to be completed in 2017 and will be designed by Marine Technology Development (MTD), Keppel Offshore & Marine’s ship design and development arm.

The new vessel will be designed to operate in temperatures of down to -30°C, and will have an Ice Class Arc 5 notation, plus Class 3 dynamic positioning and diving support functions.

“There is a demand for modern ice-class multi-purpose vessels in the market and we believe this new state-of-the art vessel we are building with Keppel Singmarine is ideally suited to meet this need,” said Knut Reinertz, director of Luxembourg’s Maritime Construction Services (MSC), New Orient Marine’s parent company. The new vessel will be the first ice-class multi-purpose vessel in MSC’s fleet.

“We are able to leverage our experience as operators and charterers, together with Keppel Singmarine’s expertise and track record in the design and construction of ice-class vessels, to expand our service offerings with this kind of specialised vessel,” Reinertz continued.

Keppel Singmarine has so far built seven ice-class vessels for the Arctic and Caspian regions. It currently has four ice-class vessels in its orderbook, including the contract from MSC.

“Moving forward, we will continue to invest in technology and work with MTD to be a leading solutions provider in this market,” Abu Bakar Mohd Nor, managing director of Keppel Singmarine, said. [15/01/15]
