Koreans tipped to take over Philly Shipyard

Hanwha Ocean, the Korean yard formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, is being tipped as making a bid for Philly Shipyard.

Korean media reports claim a Hanwha Ocean inspection team has been touring the Aker-controlled American yard this week, and is keen to buy the shipyard with a view to focus on US defence ships and offshore wind power installation vessels.

The speculation forced Philly Shipyard to issue a release yesterday in which it did not specifically deny Hanwha Ocean’s interest.

“The Company is continuously looking at strategic alternatives to maximise shareholder value and will inform the market in due course,” the release stated.

  1. Your post on Koreans taking over Philly Shipyard is welcome news to the global maritime industry. This initiative of the Koreans will certainly set up a new precedent in retrieving shipyards which are actually birthplace of the ships. Hope the makeover materialises soon.
