Local government distances itself from STX Dalian takeover

Dalian: Sources within the local municipal government in Dalian have told SinoShip News they have no intention of taking over STX Dalian, part of the financially troubled Korean conglomerate  STX Group.

With STX in dire trouble assets are being sold, and there had been speculation that the local government would step in to keep the jobs of thousands of yard workers.

Far more likely is China Shipbuilding Industry Co (CSIC) taking over the huge yard. CSIC, the umbrella holding organization for northern Chinese yards, is likely to have to shift one of its premier yards, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC) to Changxing island, where STX Dalian is based, soon. DSIC’s original yard, founded in 1896, is situated in the heart of the downtown area in Dalian, a site ripe for redevelopment.

STX Dalian set up its enormous premises on Changxing island, an hour or so, outside of the city centre six years ago, and the island has since been ringfenced as a shipbuilding and petrochemical base with DSIC likely to be relocated there in the coming months.  [16/07/13]
