Local owner forced to pay damages for sunken ship

Manila: The owner of the sunken ship that caused an oil spill in Guimaras in the centre of the Philippines has paid almost P2.2m in damages.

Seen Sam Shipping, the Cebu-based owner of the ship, Sportivo, paid the compensation fee earlier this week with the majority of the pay out going to affected fishermen.

Despite the pay out the local government said criminal charges will still be pursued against Seen Sam for its slow response to clean up operations. The vessel sank in bad weather this January.

Meanwhile, wreckage retrieval of the sunken ship has begun.  [22/05/14]
