Maersk forecasts ‘robust’ 2013 China imports

Shanghai: Maersk, the Danish shipping giant, expects to see strong China import growth in 2013. David Williams, managing director of Maersk Line East & Central China, said yesterday at a press conference in Shanghai: “Import growth [for 2012] was more robust than exports, although at a lower level than the previous year. And we expect that import growth will continue to be quite robust in the years ahead.”

However, Maersk is less optimistic about China’s export growth. “We’ve seen a very strong finish to 2012 and good volumes leading out to the Chinese New Year, the question is how quickly those volumes will come back after the Chinese New Year,” said Williams. The firm predicts a stronger second half in 2013, but a weaker first half.  [26/02/13]
