Navig8 selects Hyundai Mipo for STX replacement orders

Brokers report Navig8 Chemical Tankers has got South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard to build a series of ships. The deal is for two firm and six options of 50,000 dwt chemical carriers. The ships are priced at $36.5m and will deliver in 2018.

Navig8 had originally tapped STX Offshore & Shipbuilding to build a pair of chemical tankers, but that contract was cancelled as the yard ran into financial difficulties.

Established in 2013 by the Navig8 Group, the chemical tanker owner is a familiar name at Hyundai Mipo with 18 of its 23 ships in the water built there.

Last week, Navig8 Chemical Tankers clinched a sale and leaseback deal with Japan’s SBI Holdings for two 25,000 dwt stainless steel chemical tankers .

SBI, with the help of debt financing from Credit Agricole, is acquiring the pair and chartering them back to Navig8 for 11-years on bareboat charters with options to re-acquire them included in the deal.

The vessels are currently under construction at Kitanihon Shipbuilding, part of an order for six.

Navig8 said it will net $74m from the deal.
