New shipping registers raise concerns

They are more than 9,000 km apart, in separate continents, both are landlocked, but the backwaters that are Laos and Eswatini have one common link – new shipping registers.

The Splash Extra lead today carries an investigation into the Indian companies establishing shipping registries and classification societies around the world to accommodate ships with murky pasts.

The news follows on from earlier reports about how Gabon had become last year’s fastest-growing shipping registry. In the opening days of 2024, Gabon’s growth has been even more phenomenal thanks to a massive reflagging operation conducted by Russia’s top shipping concern, Sovcomflot.

Elsewhere in the monthly subscription title, there’s regular markets commentary of the main shipping segments, a pick of the best analyst commentary, a sale and purchase update, a guide to how to handle future fuels while our special correspondent consults a Feng Shui master to assess shipping’s prospects in the upcoming Year of the Dragon.

Published on the last Wednesday of every month and priced for as little as $200 a year, Splash Extra serves as a concise monthly snapshot, ensuring readers are on top of where the shipping markets are headed. For more details on Splash Extra subscriptions, click here.
