NKT orders new cable laying vessel

Danish offshore cabling specialist NKT has placed an order for the construction of a new cable laying vessel.

According to a company statement, the order for the construction of the vessel has been placed with Norwegian shipyard Vard while the design of the vessel will be done by the Salt Ship Design.

When the vessel is completed, it will work alongside NKT Victoria to connect offshore wind farms to land as part of a multi-billion-dollar project led by Dutch-German transmission grid operator TenneT.

In parallel, NKT will be investing in a new high-voltage factory on an existing site in Karlskrona, Sweden. Both the factory and the vessel are expected to be in operation in 2027. The investment scheme for the two is expected to amount to around $1.1bn from 2023 to 2026.

The plans for the double investment were announced in May 2023, driven by a strong order intake and, at the time, a record order backlog of over $7.5bn.
