Offshore will not save Chinese shipyards

Shanghai: At the 4th China International Offshore Engineering Summit held yesterday in Shanghai, Wu Jusheng, General Manager of Maritime Consultation Department for Great China of DNV, said China's offshore equipment industry lags about ten to fifteen years behind Singapore and South Korea.

“Currently China’s total order volume of offshore equipment is almost four times of Korea’s, however, China’s total order value is only half that of Korea,” Wu Jusheng said.

With the traditional shipbuilding market still in the doldrums, lots of Chinese shiyards set their eyes on the offshore market.

“Offshore equipment is not a market that can expand unlimitedly, and it is not the life-saving straw for Chinese shipyards,” Wu added.

Wu reckons that entering into the high-end offshore market needs a national-level strategy and policy. [22/08/13]
