Oman to import Iranian gas

Dubai: The news service of the Iranian Ministry of Energy said on Tuesday that Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to export gas to Oman starting from 2015 in a 25-year deal worth about $60bn.

The Iranian Oil Ministry website said that the recent Memorandum of Understanding signed by the new Iranian Energy Minister, Bijan Zenjana, with his Omani counterpart, Mohammed bin Hamad Al Romhi, includes an agreement to start a pipeline to transport gas to Oman as soon as possible.

Oman agreed before to buy gas from Iran in 2005, and in 2007 a draft agreement was signed but the two sides did not agree on the final terms.

According to the US embassy cables leaked by WikiLeaks, the United States pressed Oman to buy fuel from other sources such as Qatar.  [28/08/13]
