Petrobras sets sights on e-methanol with Maersk’s future fuel supplier

Brazilian state-controlled energy giant Petrobras has signed an agreement with Maersk’s future fuel supplier, European Energy, to evaluate e-methanol business opportunities. 

A non-binding memorandum of understanding signed in Denmark will see the two companies work towards developing an e-methanol plant in Brazil.

Petrobras said the deal fits with its 2024–28 strategic plan to ensure the company’s readiness for more sustainable fuels and its contribution to the energy transition.

Danish renewables and power-to-x developer operates in several countries and has assets already operating and further projects under development in the northeast of Brazil.

The company is setting up a facility in southern Denmark to produce e-methanol that Maersk’s 2,100 teu feeder vessel will use as fuel once it comes on-stream in the first half of 2024.

“Petrobras wants to focus on having good partners like European Energy. Established, reliable companies who are solid enough to work with us on large-scale projects. This partnership will benefit both sides. We can provide our knowledge and help to bring both the companies and our countries closer together,” said Jean Paul Prates, the president of Petrobras.

Other energy majors have been looking to become providers of green methanol in the marine fuel segment. In September, Maersk struck a deal with Norway’s Equinor to supply the fuel for its first methanol-powered vessel into the first half of 2024.
