Sittwe port upgrade nearly ready

Bangkok: The rapid development of Myanmar’s port infrastructure continues with news that Indian-backed Sittwe port is set to open this May.

The river port is designed to boost bilateral trade between the two nations via waterways and road links to the port, a belated effort by India to try and remain relevant to its neighbour who has seen billions invested by China in port and pipleline developments across Myanmar in recent years.

The port project kicked off in 2010 and has been hit by delays. Meanwhile, both the road and waterway connections to India are also a long way from complete.

In related news, Japan has agreed to come onboard as a key investor in the much discussed – and delayed – Dawei megaport project. The port and special economic zone project has been on the drawing board between Thai and Myanmar authorities for many years. Construction is now likely to start this year, officials in Myanmar said yesterday.  [04/02/15]
