Van Oord lines up wind farm installation newbuild for 1.6 GW project in Germany

Dutch marine construction firm Van Oord has been appointed as a preferred supplier for the transport and installation of foundations for RWE and Northland Power’s 1.6 GW offshore wind cluster in Germany.

The so-called Nordseecluster is expected to supply green electricity to the equivalent of 1.6m German households annually as of 2029. The project includes four offshore wind farms in the German North Sea, 35 km North of the island of Juist and 55 km off the German Coast.

Under the contract, Van Oord will install a total of 104 extended monopiles with a weight up to 1,750 tonnes, of which 44 foundations will be installed in 2025 and 60 more in 2027 as part of a two-phase project.

The company will deploy its methanol-ready offshore installation jackup vessel Boreas currently under construction at Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard in China and expected to enter the market in 2024.
