Manila looks at closing smaller ports

Manila: With smuggling continue to be a serious problem across the archipelago the finance department in Manila is looking at closing down a number of smaller ports.

"We’re looking at closing certain ports around the country…We have a lot of ports, and in fact when I visited some of the ports, they practically do not have shipments — there are some ports that don’t make sense," Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima told reporters at the sidelines of a meeting of the Federation of Philippine Industries at the Manila Diamond Hotel earlier this week.

Purisima said the review is part of reforms the department is looking to implement in the Customs bureau, aside from its planned accreditation system for ports.  [21/06/13]
