A workers strike at Damen Galati Shipyard in Romania continues today, with hundreds of workers gathering in front of the administrative headquarters of the shipyard refusing to go to work.
Operations at the yard have been severely affected by the strike, which started on Tuesday and involves over 400 workers unhappy with their current salary levels.
Local reports suggest that most of the workers on strike are from Sectia 1A Corporation, a subcontractor of the shipyard, and they claim there is a huge pay gap between worker groups that do the same work at the yard.
Splash understands some workers are paid an average of just €700 ($832) per month.
Management of the shipyard invited 10 of the protesting workers to negotiate on the issue, however the first offer made by the shipyard was turned down. A new round of negotiations started yesterday with no outcome confirmed yet.
Damen Galati is the largest of Damen’s 32 shipyards, repair yards and related companies.
