Cyan Renewables clinches Siemens Gamesa charter for SOV newbuild in Taiwan

Singapore-based offshore wind vessel pure-play Cyan Renewables has landed a 15-year charter deal with wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa for its first service operation vessel (SOV) newbuild in Asia.

The SOV will enter service in 2026 and work on the 1,044 MW Hai Long offshore wind farms off the coast of Changhua County in Taiwan.

The vessel will be delivered by Vard with construction of the shipbuilder’s 419 design expected to begin in the first quarter of 2024.

Cyan Renewables will equip the SOV with Siemens’ BlueDrive PlusC propulsion system, for optimal energy efficiency while minimising its environmental footprint.

“The hybrid diesel electric vessel will incorporate modern DC technology and it is the first time such technology is combined with two retractable Azimuth thrusters,” the company noted.

Lee Keng Lin, founding CEO of Cyan Renewables, commented: “We are grateful for this opportunity to build Siemens Gamesa’s first SOV in Asia. It is an affirmation of our operational excellence and our consistent efforts in local content development. This contract also represents a significant milestone for Cyan Renewables as we work towards building up our vessel capacity to support the global offshore wind industry.”

The long-term contract is a follow-on collaboration between Siemens Gamesa and Cyan Renewables after a deal for three offshore wind farms in Belgium for Cyan’s purpose-built SOV, Groenewind.
