Finland readies tenders for 6 GW of offshore wind

Finland is set to launch tenders for five offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 6 GW later this year and in 2024 once the country’s municipalities approve its zoning initiatives.

The initiatives, proposed by the Finnish state-owned enterprise Metsahallitus, cover the municipalities of Siikajoki, Hailuoto, Pyhäjoki and Raahe, Närpiö and Kristiinankaupunki, all situated on the west coast of Finland, with projects anticipated to become operational in the 2030s.

Once approved, Metsahallitus said it will launch a tender for two projects in September-October 2023, with an additional call for bids planned for 2024 for the next two projects. The final tender for the fifth project will be decided later.

Last December, Sweden’s Vattenfall was selected in the first of a number of international offshore wind tenders to be carried out by Metsähallitus to build and operate Finland’s first major offshore wind farm. The project, located at Korsnäs off the Finnish west coast, will have a capacity of 1.3 GW and a potential annual production of 5 TWh.
