Mainstream and Hexicon venture seeks permit for 2 GW wind farm off Sweden

Freja Offshore, a joint venture between Aker Horizons-controlled Mainstream Renewable Power and Stockholm-based floating wind developer Hexicon, has submitted plans for a 2 GW wind farm in Swedish waters.

The Cirrus project in Sweden’s economic zone about 50km southeast of Karlskrona if fully developed could provide electricity to 500,000 single-family homes in southern Sweden and help push down the electricity price.

The project is planned to be an offshore wind farm with bottom-fixed turbines, but Freja Offshore said it will also investigate the potential use of floating wind turbines for the deepest sections.

The application has been submitted to the Ministry of Climate and Business. It concerns the construction and operation of the wind farm and the establishment of the internal cable network The government will prepare the application and collect opinions from a number of authorities in a referral round before making a decision.

In April, Mainstream and Hexicon tie-up also applied for a 2.5 GW floating wind farm off Sweden. The Mareld project is planned more than 40 km off the west coast of Orust, and when fully operational, it has the potential to deliver more than half of the entire existing electricity consumption of the Västra Götaland region.
