MMHE seals landmark offshore wind contract

Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) has secured a contract for its first offshore wind project.

As a subcontractor to Petrofac, a subsidiary of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MHB), will work on an offshore substation for TenneT’s Ijmuiden ver Alpha project in the Netherlands.

With 40 gigawatts, the Dutch-German transmission system operator will account for almost two-thirds of the 65 GW offshore wind energy target by 2030, as agreed by Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium.

MMHE’s workscope consists of construction engineering, fabrication, mechanical completion, load out and sea fastening, and architectural works on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis.

The platform will comprise a topside, weighing approximately 30,000 tonnes and a jacket, weighing about 10,000 tonnes, MMHE said, adding that it will also collaborate with Petrofac and towards the possibility of fabrication works for two additional substations of similar size.

Pandai Othman, managing director and CEO of MHB commented: “This represents a significant achievement for MHB on two fronts that we have been diligently pursuing – venturing into the renewable energy sector and establishing our presence internationally.”

MHB will be expanding further the reactivation of MMHE East yard which will be utilised alongside MMHE West yard in delivering this project. These rank among the largest fabrication yards in Southeast Asia.
