New benchmark set with sale of Norwegian VLCC

The sale of a Norwegian-flagged VLCC has set a new benchmark as tanker values continue to climb.

The Korean-built, eight-year-old 299,998 dwt Eco Seas has been sold to undisclosed interests for $98.5m. The ship was owned by Norwegian heavyweights, Awilco and TRF.

According to Clarksons Research, the firm price shows that values for semi-modern tonnage are up some 10% since last year while brokers are predicting even higher prices in today’s aggressive market.

According to Clarksons, secondhand tanker prices are currently at 15-year highs.
